Are these books not at the public library if students still want to read them? I agree with MCS in their decision to keep these books out of schools where they don’t offer academic value. There are other places to access them if students really want them.
We get what you are saying, but MCS policy states that books whose sole purpose is reading for pleasure have a place and are important parts of MCS libraries. Reading for pleasure builds fluency, and we would argue these books have academic value for that reason. Public school libraries need to reflect the needs of their diverse communities. We trust school librarians to stock their libraries with a wide variety of books, and we trust district parents to make decisions about which books are appropriate for their students.
This logic doesn’t hold. Reading pornographic material would fall under the category of “reading for pleasure.” And pornography should not have a place in our kids’ education. There is clearly material that is appropriate and material that is not. The latter has no place in our schools.

Good Morning, Jen! We actually addressed this here if you’d like to read: https://open.substack.com/pub/mariettainthemiddle/p/protect-the-children?r=6cczv&utm_medium=ios
There’s no pornography in the High School library, nor was there ever. Happy Sunday!
I would remove both the books mentioned as well. I don’t believe books like these belong in our kids’ schools.
